Excellent large laptopq

Date:May 11, 2012
Very pleased so far. Especially like the clarity of the screen and backlite keyboard. It is a bit heavier than I would have thought. One disappointment is that the DVD drive will not accept minidiscs. HP WiFi mouse set up disc could not be used.

High Performance Laptop

Date:May 8, 2012
Laptop is ridiculously fast, has a great clear vivid screen and I love the backlit keyboard - so much easier for working at night on photography projects where I don't want a lot of background light making glare. Sound quality is high end for a laptop, for sure.
Downsides: it is big, so it won't travel easy (but that's the price you pay for a big gorgeous screen). I personally miss having a fingerprint reader for super-fast and secure logins. Also, as an anti-Mac person, I kind of don't like the fact that this computer looks like it's trying to be a Beats-customized version of a Mac. But that may just be me.
Overall, I'd recommend this laptop for anyone looking for great graphics and performance.

Good purchase

Date:May 2, 2012
I bought this laptop because I need a powerful machine for design and animation purpose, yet more affordable than Macbook Pro 17. This is a great laptop. I worried about the heat problems and the color correctness before the purchase, but I found neither of such problems with it. Fast speed, and sharp display, very suitable for my work.
The only complain I had is that it doesn't come with a secondary hard drive mounting kit, though it had that space for another drive. I ended up purchasing the mounting kit from HP and it's another 50 bucks.

HP Envy 17 customized

Date:May 1, 2012
I have waited and waited to upgrade to a laptop that hopefully will be the last one. I have been in the data - network - telecomm industry for 39 years and have used many different products for both business and personal use thru all of them.
I took advantage of the discounts and upgrades offered thru HP-online in March 2012 to purchase the Envy 17 with 8GB memory and BlueRay drive. I only wish I could have had a laptop as functional and as well built as this one to use all those years. I would have chosen the 15 or 14-inch Envy if I still carried one around, the only reason being the weight. I chose this for a desktop replacement unit. The only frustration I have is a personal one, the Synaptics ClickPad. Although it works just fine, I will probably use a wireless mouse, old habits die hard I guess.
I look forward to enjoying what I feel is the finest keyboard I have ever used. You can't beat the Beats audio, multiple speakers and what a great idea with the Beats Button volume control. The finest brushed aluminum metal body I have ever held. And if you type you will also like the large deck to rest your hands on while you type. I am also very happy with the full HD display, simply beautiful. A Tip of the Hat to HP!! You deserve it!!

Excellent product

Date:April 28, 2012
I ordered Envy 17 when my old 2002 model gave up the ghost. This is the 2012 model which is considerably different from previous versions.
The industrial design, in both function and beauty, is outstanding. The connectivity, with all the ports I need, is also excellent. The keyboard and controls are all as good as it gets. The touchpad is just a small notch under the best there is. The quality of the display screen is the single biggest reason I ordered this laptop. Finally, a laptop screen on a "mainstream" model that is really good enough, with calibration, to judge photo and video images so that I, as a professional, can decide if they are worth keeping or worth re-doing. Incredibly good and probably an IPS type screen, even though HP doesn't say so. The color gamut, contrast and brightness can be manipulated to look almost as good as a fine desktop monitor.
Finally, the performance is almost whatever you spec it out to be. The options for drives, processors, and memory are enough to help you save money with very good performance or go all out for a great perfroming machine by adding more money - just the way it should be. While it probably won't make a top-end gaming machine, this Envy 17 can do just about anything else very well that a person could possible ask of it.
The pre-installed bloatware is on the light side, which makes me happy. I spent an hour or three updating, adding and removing some of the software to get down to my preferred set-up, and had no problems - even when getting rid of the notoriously hard to completely remove Norton antivirus.
I've just started working with this computer, but, so far, I think it is the best laptop I've ever had, by quite a large margin, and it didn't break the bank at all; it was downright inexpensive for what I got, after I applied an online coupon to my purchase. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a stylish, high performing desktop replacement style laptop at a reasonable cost with a great display screen.

HP Envy 17

Date:April 28, 2012
Everything I expected and more! It's been sometime since I've owned a laptop, so when it came time to get one, the HP Envy 17 had some very impressive features and was priced right. Using HP "customize and buy" link, I was easily able to upgrade the processor, ram and hard drive to create a fast/full featured laptop for use with web and graphics design. With an internal 300GB SSD, Windows 7 boots in about 12 seconds! Couldn't be more pleased with my purchase...tip of the hat to HP!

Outstanding Laptop

Date:April 23, 2012
I purchased this laptop for my son for use at college. It may seem to be a little early to most people, but this will give us a full 4 months to work out the idiosyncrasies, along with making sure all the programs he needs are up and running.
Besides the obvious school work my son will be encountering, we installed some graphic-intensive games. The Envy earned its title as I am very envious of his new laptop. The 8Gb of ram along with the 1Gb of video memory = NO LAG!
In short, this is one awesome laptop,

Manufacturing Defects

Date:April 20, 2012
The Envy comes packed with great features for the price, but overall I am dis-satisfied with the quality. When I opened the laptop's lid, there was a very noticeable scuff. After a more close examination, the aluminum casing is bulging from what appears to be from a screw from the internal components being screwed in too much.

amazing but video card eh....

Date:April 15, 2012
My biggest problem with this pc is the video card. Running it how it should or full power. I seem to max it out doing simple things. maybe its just defective I don't know. It will slow my hole laptop down to a point of freezing and the point of crashing, all programs will lock up and sound card will stop to pop, but the problem only happens when i do video work like games, movies, youtube, sore fourth. Best part is you can not upgrade it. so with all this ram and 8 cores of pure power i cant ever watch videos...... see the problem here?

Needs Improvement

Date:April 10, 2012
There are some wonderful things about this laptop, but..............................., on the other hand................................, there are some serious negatives as well. I think HP should have this product far more perfected before putting it on the market.
Some features are very nice, whereas others are lacking quality such as the mouse. Also,it needs to have a better connection with the home TV. Many people now wish to use their laptops in unison with their TV. You can do this, but you will not have good video on your laptop when doing so. After you do the MANY updates which are needed once you receive your laptop, you will find that some of them have caused some little glitches in the operation of your laptop. The laptops should arrive with updates as close to current as possible. A customer should not have to spend many many hours updating a brand new laptop. It is critical that you do the updates right away as your laptop is so far behind when you first get it.
I would like the touch of the keyboard to be a little smoother, it is OK, but could be better. I wish they would bring back the lovely acid etched case with the pretty design on it. I'm not sure why HP would no longer continue to have such a beautiful case. The backlit keyboard with proximity sensors is REALLY NICE!!. It is WONDERFUL that it runs cool, that is a great improvement from their previous model. Also, the Beats Audio is probably the laptops best feature. I feel sure that HP is noticing the things that people like and dislike, and I feel sure that their design team is listening to the reccomendations of it's customers. In conclusion, this is a laptop with some wonderful features but it definitely still needs some perfecting.

good all around machine.

Date:April 5, 2012
Its a real good swiss army knife. (metaphore) does everything my HDX did. HDX sound was much better on laptop speakers unless i'm not using beats audio properly. For some reason always had problem setting up partitioned back up drive. No other problems though. Grade A plus. Good I/O USB3. Motion sensors are awsome. Much lighter and runs cooler than my HDX. good job HP.

Worst laptop I ever bought.

Date:April 4, 2012
Nothing but bad on this one for me.
1. Scrolling hardly works, makes surfing hard.
2. Very loud fan.
3. No battery Life.
4. USB ports too close together can't have a mouse and flash drive in at same time.
5. constantly freezes during simple tasks like moving files.
6. Volume and mute button messes with most games, by causing buttons to be pressed every time you turn volume up and down.
7. Blu Ray player failed after 4 weeks and had to wait on the phone with HP for hours and had to send my computer in for weeks.
8. Black lit keyboard doesn't stay lit at all times.
9. Poor Customer Service.
First and last time with HP since these are only what I could think of in a few minutes.

Horror!

Date:April 4, 2012
Horror! After transfering all files from my old computer, the first thing I did was to utilize the Windows Backup and Restore feature. An error message appeared that said the backup was unsuccessful; that my external backup disk did not have enough room. My external backup disk had 270 GB free out of 298 GB, more than enough to handle 170 GB of backup data. Then I tried the Windows Backup and Restore feature to a hard drive on a networked computer on my system. I got the same error message that said the backup was unsuccessful. Regrettably, I had deleted all my files on the old computer after I had transferred them to the new Envy17 because I had expected to do the Windows Backup and Restore on the Envy 17. Well, at least I had the files on my new Envy17, but that's not the end of the Horror! story. I contacted HP Support and their first thought was that the problem was with my backup drives, and I explained my external drive and my networked drive were not defective. So HP Support suggested that I do a Full Factory Restore of the computer because it may be that files got corrupted, and they assured me that if I did a recovery backup all my files would get backed up. Unfortunately for me, my MS Outlook contacts, calendar and emails did not get backed up during the recovery backup , as I learned after I completed the full factory restore. And after the full factory restore, the Windows Backup and Restore still could not do a successful backup. I had lost all my MS Outlook info and had a computer that could not do backups. I returned the Envy17 to HP. The features on this computer are really excellent, except for the backup, and I'm hoping that HP will give assurance that this problem is not endemic to all Envy17 configured like mine was.

A solid performer at a solid price

Date:March 29, 2012
I never expected a desktop replacement notebook to be a featherwieght, especially a 17" unit, but the Envy is very heavy. That said, the layout (interior) is far superior to previous models and very user friendly for access to memory and hard drives.
The display is very bright and sharp as a tack! The battery life is unexpected as it is about twice as long as my previous HP laptop (a welcome and pleasant surprise!). The backlit keyboard is just gorgeous and makes my old eyes happy while typing.
I am very disappointed with the touchpad on this unit, though, it has no scroll feature like the older ones did, & it's senstivity is severaly lacking, even after adjustment in the control panel mouse app. This necessitates the need for a BT mouse. Another large disappointment was all of the unnecessary bloatware installed on the hard drive from the factory. For a business machine, this is unacceptable, IMO. It took several hours to extract and remove the uneccesary programs, time that could have been far better spent on xfering my old data and apps from the old notebook to the new.
On the whole, it's a good notebook for the money, the performance is very good, the battery life exceptional, the display is just breathtaking! If were just a little lighter I would be ecstatic with it. As it stands, I'll settle for very happy.
